Nigeria public debt rises to N166.79 trillion

Nigeria’s total public debt stock rose to N166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026, according to the Debt Management Office (DMO). This represents a 4.7% increase from the N159.35 trillion recorded at the end of March 2026.

In US dollar terms, the total debt reached $120.93 billion, up from $114.95 billion in March. The debt portfolio is comprised of N91.59 trillion in domestic debt (54.91%) and N75.20 trillion in external debt (45.09%). The Federal Government remains the primary debtor, accounting for approximately N152.77 trillion of the total, while states and the Federal Capital Territory hold N14.01 trillion.

Financial pressures persist as interest payments accounted for 56.5% of Nigeria’s external debt service bill between April and June 2026. Meanwhile, the government is seeking to diversify revenue, with non-oil revenue rising to N5.07 trillion in Q2 2026, driven by increases in corporate income tax and customs duties.
