Nigeria Advances AI Regulation and Compensation Measures

Policy analyst Victor Okhai urged AI firms to compensate Nigerian media organisations for using their content, stating, “We know you’re using our stuff… so pay, and pay well for it.” At the T&A Legal AI Summit, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu highlighted Nigeria’s progress in artificial intelligence and announced that the National Digital Economy and e‑Governance Bill has cleared the Senate and awaits presidential assent.

Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere‑Ekun outlined a judiciary digital reform, including the near‑full rollout of the National Case Management System and mandatory electronic filing, while cautioning that AI cannot replace the constitutional judgment of judges. CarbonAI CEO Debola Ibiyode warned that without strong regulatory guardrails, Nigeria could miss out on the projected $15 billion AI contribution to GDP by 2030 and advocated for an “AI Diplomacy” framework to protect data sovereignty and public trust.
