Nigeria pushes for integrated transport system to lower logistics costs

The Nigerian Federal Government is advocating for a fundamental overhaul of the nation’s transportation and logistics sector. During the 2026 Transport Industry Summit in Lagos, officials and stakeholders emphasized the need to transition from isolated infrastructure projects to a fully integrated, multimodal national system.

Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo, Technical Adviser to the Vice-President on Transportation, Logistics and Innovation, stated that Nigeria’s economic potential is currently constrained by structural weaknesses. Key obstacles identified include fragmented transport modes, excessive checkpoints, insecurity, poor coordination, and informality within the road sector. These issues contribute to high logistics costs and delays for both goods and passengers.

Stakeholders are calling for a system where road, rail, maritime, and inland waterways operate as complementary components. This approach aims to allow seamless movement between modes—such as transferring cargo from seaports to rail or road—without redundant administrative processes. Obayendo suggested looking to international models like Singapore, Germany, and China for successful integration of intelligent transport systems and automation.
