Nigeria pushes green procurement and safety standards in automotive industry

A study published in the Journal of Transport and Supply Chain Management finds that Nigeria’s automotive aftermarket is increasingly driven by government green procurement policies. Senior officials in the Ministry of Transportation say compliance with national environmental laws and mandatory ISO 14001 certification is now required for firms seeking public contracts, making environmental certification a competitive advantage.

At the third Nigeria Auto Industry Summit, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the Federal Road Safety Corps warned that the country’s shift to compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles (EVs) faces safety gaps. They highlighted the need for stricter standards enforcement, better testing facilities, and public awareness after a CNG cylinder explosion in Edo State was traced to an uncertified component. Both agencies are developing standard operating procedures to ensure safe deployment of CNG and EV technologies under President Bola Tinubu’s clean‑mobility agenda.
