Nigeria ratifies framework for digitized national addressing system

The National Addressing Council (NAC) has ratified a preliminary framework to establish a modern, digitized national addressing system in Nigeria. Chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja, the initiative aims to create a unified system to locate citizens, businesses, and communities to improve economic activity, security, public service delivery, and national planning.

Under the new framework, the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation will act as the council’s secretariat to coordinate implementation. The project is designed to integrate with identity management systems and government databases, ensuring that both rural villages and metropolitan areas are included in the digital infrastructure. Vice President Shettima emphasized that a functional addressing system is a critical connection between the state and its citizens, noting that the inability to locate people and businesses creates weaknesses in commerce and social protection.
