Nigeria calls for global governance reform at BRICS Summit
At the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Nigeria has advocated for a significant overhaul of the global governance architecture and international financial institutions. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu called for a more equitable and responsive international system, including reforms to the United Nations Security Council, to better reflect contemporary economic and demographic realities.
Nigeria is seeking deeper cooperation with BRICS nations in sectors such as artificial intelligence, fintech, energy, agriculture, and manufacturing. The administration emphasized that these partnerships should prioritize technology transfer, local value addition, and industrial development rather than mere resource extraction. Additionally, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the multilateral trading system, stressing that sustainable prosperity requires global integration.
Domestically, debates continue regarding Nigeria’s economic trajectory. While some observers argue that current reforms like fuel subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification provide a foundation for growth, others express concern over rising poverty and the need for more pragmatic initiatives to protect citizens' purchasing power. The Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) has challenged future presidential candidates to present concrete plans to reach a $1 trillion economy by 2031.
