EFCC offers whistleblower rewards for recovery of stolen assets abroad
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced a new incentive scheme to encourage whistleblowers to assist in recovering stolen Nigerian assets held abroad. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede stated that individuals providing credible information that leads to successful recovery could receive between 2.5% and 5% of the asset's value.
Speaking at the Cambridge International Symposium on Economic Crime in the United Kingdom, Olukoyede highlighted the agency's recent successes, noting that the EFCC has secured the forfeiture of over $500 million in cash and assets to the Nigerian government within the last three years. He attributed these recoveries to Nigeria's legal framework, which allows for the forfeiture of assets suspected to be proceeds of crime without requiring a prior criminal conviction.
Specific major recoveries mentioned include an aircraft forfeited following a $30 million bribe involving a power project monitoring committee member, and a property containing approximately 753 housing units linked to a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Additionally, the commission is pursuing the forfeiture of nine properties linked to former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, having already secured orders for 48 of 57 traced properties.
