Nigeria reforms agricultural education with practical training focus

The Nigerian Federal Government has unveiled a major reform of agricultural education aimed at enhancing food security and youth employment. Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa announced the introduction of 39 revised or newly developed agricultural curricula and 31 National Occupational Standards for tertiary institutions, including polytechnics and colleges of education.

A central feature of the reform is a shift in training methodology, implementing an 80:20 ratio of practical training to theoretical instruction. This approach prioritizes hands-on learning through teaching farms, greenhouses, and agricultural technology hubs to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry requirements.

The updated curricula incorporate modern fields such as precision agriculture, climate-smart agriculture, artificial insemination, and agribusiness. The initiative, part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’, was developed through collaboration between the Ministries of Education, Agriculture and Food Security, and Livestock Development to ensure graduates possess the technical competencies needed for modern agricultural production.
