Nigeria regains IMO Council seat to influence global maritime policy

Nigeria has regained its seat in Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council, allowing the nation to participate in the formulation of global maritime policies. Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), noted that the country had been absent from the Council for 14 years, leaving it without a voice in international maritime decision-making.

During the 2026 World Maritime Day commemorations in Lagos, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola emphasized government efforts to strengthen the sector. Key initiatives include expanding seafarer training, professional certification, and practical onboard experience to produce globally competitive workers.

To support these goals, the government is fostering partnerships, such as one between Nigeria LNG Limited and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, to provide cadets with necessary sea-time experience. Additionally, there is a focus on strengthening fisheries colleges and research institutions to improve skills in aquaculture, marine technology, and sustainable fisheries management.
