Nigeria rejoins World Energy Council as electric mobility expands in Africa

Nigeria has officially rejoined the World Energy Council (WEC) as a Member Committee. The governing board of the new Nigerian Member Committee was inaugurated in Abuja on August 7, marking the country’s return to the global organization after more than six decades.

The committee is led by Chairman Abdulrazaq Isa, co-founder of Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited, and CEO Bala Wunti, formerly of NNPC Limited. The board includes various experts from academia, policy, and the private energy sector, such as Oando PLC’s Ainojie Alex Irune.

In a separate development regarding Africa’s energy transition, electric mobility is being integrated into wildlife conservation efforts in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Rangers are utilizing solar-charged electric motorcycles to patrol the game reserve. This shift aims to reduce fuel costs and maintenance while providing near-silent transport that allows rangers to approach wildlife and track poachers without causing noise disturbances.
