Nigeria releases eight months of salary arrears to SSANU members

The Nigerian federal government has released eight months of outstanding salary arrears to members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). The payment covers the Consolidated Non-Academic Staff Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CONTA) for the period of January to August.

This intervention follows a period of intense standoff and a final ultimatum issued by the union, which had threatened an indefinite strike. Such industrial action posed a significant risk to the academic calendar, as non-academic staff are essential to the administrative and technical operations of federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa stated that the release of funds demonstrates the administration’s commitment to staff welfare and industrial harmony. The move follows the recent payment of the Consolidated Academic Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CATA) to academic staff, signaling a broader effort to stabilize the tertiary education sector.
