Nigeria religious leaders sign interfaith peace accord in Abuja

More than 50 Christian and Muslim leaders in Nigeria signed an interfaith peace accord, known as the Abuja Declaration, on August 12 in Abuja. The agreement aims to reduce religious tensions, reject hate speech, and strengthen cooperation between the country’s two largest religious communities.

Organized under the patronage of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and led by the Saudi Arabia-based Muslim World League, the initiative included the signing of four memoranda of understanding. A new coordination body has been established to oversee the implementation of these agreements and promote religious harmony across the nation.

While the accord is viewed as a positive step toward mitigating the influence of extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, observers note that it does not provide an immediate solution to Nigeria’s deep-seated security and religious freedom challenges. The agreement comes as the country remains divided along religious and regional lines, with tensions expected to remain sensitive leading up to the 2027 presidential election.
