Nigeria removed from US Coast Guard port security watchlist

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has removed Nigeria from its list of nations with deficient port security. This decision eliminates the requirement for enhanced security screenings and more frequent boarding of Nigerian-flagged vessels or ships departing Nigerian ports when entering US waters.

The removal follows efforts by the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency to upgrade port infrastructure, surveillance systems, and security training. This change is expected to reduce operational costs and vessel delays for shipping companies.

Despite Nigeria's removal, ten other African nations remain on the US Coast Guard’s port security advisory list due to concerns regarding antiterrorism measures. These countries include Madagascar, Cameroon, Seychelles, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Comoros, and São Tomé and Príncipe. Vessels visiting these ports may face additional security requirements, including mandatory reporting and potential boarding by USCG officials to ensure compliance with US maritime security standards.
