Nigeria Lassa fever cases reach 1,035 with 252 deaths

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported that Lassa fever cases in Nigeria have reached 1,035 confirmed infections in 2026, resulting in 252 deaths. The latest epidemiological week 33 report indicates 14 new confirmed cases were recorded between August 10 and August 16, primarily in Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, and Benue states.

The case fatality rate has increased to 24.4 percent, a notable rise from the 18.6 percent recorded during the same period in 2025. The outbreak has been confirmed across 23 states and 117 local government areas. Five states—Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Edo, and Benue—account for 87 percent of all cumulative cases, with Ondo State alone representing 33 percent of the total.

Demographically, individuals aged 21 to 30 years remain the most affected group, though cases have been reported in people ranging from one to 93 years of age. While no new healthcare worker infections were reported in the most recent week, the NCDC noted that 54 healthcare workers have been affected by the virus so far this year. The agency continues to conduct surveillance and response activities to manage the ongoing public health concern.
