Nigeria secures five spots in African Boxing Championship finals
Five Nigerian boxers have advanced to the finals of the African Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, marking a significant turnaround for the nation's 10-member contingent. After an initial period of the tournament that saw five defeats, the team has regained momentum to keep hopes for multiple gold medals alive.
The finalists include Ridwan Raheem, who secured a victory in the men’s welterweight (60–65kg) category against Algeria’s Ismail Bekhsis. In the women's divisions, Ajishola Khadijat advanced via a 5–0 unanimous decision against Kenya’s Amina Martha, while Precious Anine defeated Egypt’s Ayyad Yomna. Blessing Orakwe also reached the final after a first-round stoppage of Uganda’s Aiwine Diana. Patricia Mbata had previously secured her qualification for the final stage.
Nigeria Boxing Federation Head of Delegation, Capt. Rasulun Kashim, expressed confidence in the athletes' ability to compete against continental rivals as the focus shifts toward winning gold.
