Nigeria security and legal issues prompt calls for institutional cooperation

In Sokoto, the Sultan, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has called for enhanced cooperation between traditional institutions and security agencies. During a meeting with the Acting Zonal Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, Halliru Isah Abubakar, the Sultan emphasized the role of traditional rulers in border security, anti-smuggling efforts, and community peacebuilding.

Separately, the Northern Ethnic Youth Groups Assembly (NEYGA) has urged the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to secure court premises nationwide. This follows an incident in Abuja where activist Omoyele Sowore and his supporters allegedly confronted and bullied a legal practitioner within the Federal High Court. NEYGA described the event as a national disgrace and a violation of the Electoral Act regarding political campaigning in judicial spaces.

In Abuja, Inspector-General Disu also launched a cybersecurity awareness campaign organized by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre. The initiative aims to combat emerging threats such as deepfakes and automated fraud by promoting intelligence-led policing and urging citizens and financial institutions to strengthen digital security measures.
