Nigeria security leaders address Northwest banditry and 2027 election integrity
Security leaders and political figures in Nigeria are addressing the persistent instability in the Northwest region. In Zamfara State, Governor Dauda Lawal hosted a three-day Northwest Security Summit organized by the Nigeria Police. The summit, themed ‘Appraising the Security Challenges in the Northwest Region’, brought together police leadership, intelligence agencies, traditional rulers, and community leaders to develop coordinated responses to banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling.
Governor Lawal emphasized that criminal networks operating across state boundaries require a cohesive security response involving real-time intelligence sharing and inter-state surveillance. He stated that bandits who refuse peace and threaten civilians must face the full consequences of the law.
Separately, former Zamfara State Governor Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar called for the integrity of the 2027 general elections to be maintained despite ongoing insecurity. Speaking at a public lecture, Yari argued that the ruling party must demonstrate its commitment to democracy by ensuring free and fair elections, noting that insecurity should not be used as a reason to compromise the electoral process.
