Nigeria Security Officials Criticize Government Over Police Shortages and Crime

Former Inspector‑General of Police Mike Okiro (retired) said the Nigerian federal government is worsening insecurity by failing to properly equip and recruit for the Nigeria Police Force. Speaking at a national security dialogue in Abuja, Okiro warned that the police have been left without armoured vehicles, communication tools and sufficient personnel, noting a five‑year lapse that saw nearly 60,000 officers leave the service without replacement.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole also attacked the security establishment, calling for a tougher stance against armed criminals and accusing Police Inspector‑General Olatunji Disu of an overly apologetic response to recent shoot‑at‑sight incidents. Oshiomhole said insecurity is the biggest obstacle to President Bola Tinubu’s re‑election and urged the president to set firm deadlines for the armed forces, citing the recruitment of 20,000 new troops and the creation of new army divisions as evidence of resolve.
