Nigeria seeks integrated transport network to drive economy

The Nigerian Federal Government is advocating for a more integrated, multimodal transportation system to drive economic transformation. Speaking at the 19th National Council on Transportation in Abuja, Minister of State for Works, Muhammad Goronyo, emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between the road, rail, maritime, and aviation sectors.

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda,’ the government is focusing on strategic infrastructure projects to improve connectivity and stimulate commerce. Key flagship highway projects include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, the Calabar-Ebonyi-Abuja (Trans-Sahara) Highway, and the Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe-Maiduguri-Yola corridor.

These initiatives are intended to serve as more than just road construction; they are designed to promote national integration and job creation. The government also aims to incorporate environmentally friendly technologies, such as solar-powered street lighting and windmill technology, to earn carbon credits and support renewable energy generation.
