Nigeria seeks international partnerships to combat security threats

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, has emphasized that national security serves as the essential foundation for unity and prosperity. Speaking during activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary in Abuja, Musa highlighted the commitment of the Armed Forces to safeguarding sovereignty and restoring peace across all regions.

On the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Musa also called for enhanced international partnerships to combat terrorism, banditry, oil theft, and cybercrime. He noted that Nigeria’s security challenges are increasingly interconnected, with national impacts and international implications that require collaboration with the United Nations, African Union, ECOWAS, and the private sector.

To strengthen domestic capabilities, the government is pursuing several measures, including the recruitment of 22,000 additional personnel, the restructuring of Army divisions, and proposals for state police and forest guards. Officials stated that the nation is transitioning toward a threat-driven security strategy to better identify gaps and prioritize resources.
