Nigeria seeks South Korean investment in manufacturing and technology

During a reception in Abuja to mark South Korea’s National Day, Nigerian officials urged South Korean companies to increase investment in the country to drive economic diversification and job creation. Babagana Wakil, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted several priority sectors for collaboration, including manufacturing, shipbuilding, digital technology, infrastructure, and maritime security.

A key focus of the appeal was agricultural mechanization, specifically regarding rice production and processing, to enhance food security. Nigeria aims to leverage South Korean expertise in industrialization and infrastructure to expand its local industrial base.

South Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Jeong Yoan, emphasized Korea’s commitment to sustainable development and youth empowerment. He noted that the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently broke ground on the Abuja Centre for Entrepreneurship to support local start-ups. Additionally, Ambassador Jeong cited ongoing initiatives such as the Smart School program and partnerships in green agriculture, noting the presence of major Korean conglomerates like Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and Daewoo E&C in Nigeria’s energy and digital sectors.
