Nigeria seeks telecom investment to bridge infrastructure gap
Nigeria faces a significant telecommunications infrastructure deficit, with an estimated need for 70,000 to 80,000 towers to achieve robust connectivity. Currently, only about 40,000 towers exist, leaving a shortfall of up to 40,000 units. This gap presents a major opportunity for investors, as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) seeks to reduce network pressure caused by rising data consumption, which grew from 1.13 terabytes to 1.66 terabytes in 2025.
Beyond basic connectivity, telecommunications infrastructure is increasingly driving broader socio-economic development in Nigeria. The sector has become critical to the growth of banking, fintech, and mobile money. Digital initiatives are also expanding into healthcare; for example, the MTN Group and the Gates Foundation launched the Maternal Health Multiplier to provide digital health guidance to 500,000 women and support 500 health facilities by 2030.
Investment in the sector has exceeded $76 billion since liberalization in 2001. Current major infrastructure service providers include IHS Towers, ATC Nigeria Wireless Infrastructure Limited, and Globacom Limited, though significant room remains for new market entrants to support digital transformation and economic development.
