Nigeria seeks to bridge climate finance gap through data and frameworks

Nigeria is working to secure funding for its climate commitments by improving data reliability, project preparation, and investment coordination. The National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), in collaboration with the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), recently held a technical workshop in Abuja focused on greenhouse gas inventory and tracking platforms.

The initiative aims to translate Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) targets into practical actions, specifically targeting the agriculture and transport sectors. Dr. Tenima Jekudemi, Director-General of the NCCC, emphasized that these efforts are vital for fulfilling Paris Agreement commitments.

Parallel efforts are underway to establish a national climate finance framework to unlock up to $30 billion in annual adaptation investments, particularly for smallholder farmers. Stakeholders, including the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer (PICTT), are working to define a national taxonomy to clarify which activities qualify as climate-resilient. This framework is intended to attract foreign green capital and provide financial support to rural populations facing droughts and flooding.
