Nigeria Senate: High turnover expected for 2027 elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of qualified candidates for the 2027 Nigerian general elections. A total of 1,301 candidates from 18 political parties are competing for the 109 available Senate seats.
Data indicates a high potential for turnover in the Nigerian National Assembly. Approximately 11 to 12 candidates are vying for each Senate seat across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Notably, at least 52 sitting senators from the current 10th Senate are not included on the list for re-election, suggesting they will not contest unless their parties utilize specific windows for alterations provided by the Electoral Act 2026.
Under Section 31 of the Electoral Act 2026, candidates may withdraw their candidature by providing written notice and a sworn affidavit to their nominating political party, which must then notify the Commission at least 90 days before the election.
