Nigeria Senate approves measures to combat human trafficking

The Nigerian Senate has approved sweeping measures to combat human trafficking and modern slavery, following reports of Nigerians being exploited in Libya. The resolutions aim to strengthen the nation’s response, protect victims, and dismantle criminal networks.

Key recommendations include the review and stricter enforcement of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015 and the Child Rights Act 2003. The Senate directed agencies, including NAPTIP, the Police, the Immigration Service, and the EFCC, to investigate suspected trafficking networks and travel agencies involved in the recruitment and exploitation of Nigerians abroad. These investigations will focus on recruitment methods, financial flows, and travel arrangements.

To support these efforts, the Senate recommended increased funding for NAPTIP and called for the establishment of a national reintegration and protection programme for returning victims, to be coordinated by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs. Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been urged to intensify diplomatic engagement with Libya regarding intelligence sharing, border management, and the repatriation of victims.
