Nigeria Senator Ireti Kingibe denies role in Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan suspension

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, said she never saw or reviewed the Senate committee report that resulted in a six‑month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan from Kogi Central. Kingibe explained that after attending a brief committee meeting she left to join a tax‑reform retreat, which she considered more relevant to her constituents.

She said she was surprised to discover a photocopy of her signature on the document and clarified she was not alleging forgery, but stressed that lawmakers should have the opportunity to examine reports before signing. Kingibe also voiced criticism of the Senate’s handling of disciplinary matters, suggesting that earlier apologies could have resolved the dispute more quickly.
