Nigeria Sets 16‑Gold Target for 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

Nigeria’s sports authorities have announced a record goal of 16 gold medals for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. National Sports Commission Director General Bukola Olopade said preparations are complete, citing full presidential support, a dedicated welfare package and a training camp in Abuja, with overseas‑based athletes expected to join after clearance from the U.S. embassy. The team will move to a pre‑Games camp in Aberdeen on July 2 before the competition opens on July 23.

Elite Athletes Development and Podium Board chief Yusuf Ali echoed the optimism, stating that the board’s preparations are aimed at “achieving better results and winning more medals” and that Nigeria’s athletes are set to surpass previous medal hauls. Both officials highlighted the coordinated effort to give athletes the best environment for success at the Games.
