Nigeria sports officials urge better governance and federation unity

Bukola Olapade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), has called for improved governance and accountability among National Sports Federations to drive economic growth and attract investment in Nigeria. Speaking at a leadership seminar organized by the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) in Abuja, Olapade emphasized that transparent administration is essential to repositioning sports as a major contributor to national development.

In a related development regarding federation stability, the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) stakeholders have reached an agreement on an electoral timetable. The NBBF Extraordinary Congress unanimously approved October 15, 2026, for its Elective Congress in Abuja. This decision aligns with the transition framework set by the international governing body, FIBA. Olapade hailed the consensus as a victory for the sport, noting that unity in the electoral process is vital for the future of Nigerian athletes and the nation's global reputation.
