Nigeria stakeholders demand improved budget implementation and accountability

Stakeholders in Nigeria are calling for improved institutional frameworks to ensure that approved government budgets translate into tangible public services. At the PULSE Summit 2026 in Abuja, Minister of Finance Taiwo Oyedele emphasized that the distinction between an approved budget and a delivered one is critical, noting that a budget document alone does not provide essential services like healthcare, education, or clean water.

In Kaduna State, participants in an Open Government Partnership (OGP) workshop highlighted similar gaps between government plans and actual budgetary releases. Stakeholders noted that while health operational plans outline necessary activities, many receive little to no funding, impacting infrastructure, pandemic preparedness, and emergency interventions. Advocates are seeking to involve citizens in tracking expenditures and monitoring performance to ensure health and social protection services are adequately funded and implemented.
