Nigeria's maritime sector urged to drive job creation and poverty reduction

Ganiyu Balogun, President of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria (ATBOWATON), has urged 2027 election candidates to prioritize the blue economy and water tourism to combat poverty and unemployment.

Balogun stated that developing Nigeria's waterways could create millions of jobs in sectors such as boat operation, fishing, and tourism. He criticized the practice of politicians providing temporary handouts like food and cash during campaigns, arguing that these actions are deceptive and fail to provide lasting economic solutions. He called on candidates to design programs that transform coastal and riverine communities into economic hubs to attract investment and generate foreign exchange.
