Nigeria stakeholders warn of job losses from self-service fuel stations

Stakeholders in Nigeria are raising concerns regarding the potential for job losses following the introduction of self-service fuel dispensing systems. The shift follows the deployment of this model by Sunbeth Energies in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory.

Public analyst Jide Ojo noted that while self-service could prevent customers from receiving less fuel than they pay for, it poses a significant risk to employment. Large filling stations that currently employ up to 30 attendants could see many of those roles become redundant.

Economist Dr. Aliyu Ilias suggested that while electronic payment growth could facilitate the transition, the country must consider whether it is psychologically and institutionally prepared. He emphasized that adequate technological systems, particularly from the Central Bank of Nigeria, are necessary for successful implementation. Labour leader Owei Lakemfa also commented on the slow adoption of such technologies in the country.
