Nigeria state governors face scrutiny over N47tn FAAC revenue

State governors in Nigeria are facing increased scrutiny regarding the management of massive revenue disbursements from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). Data from the Federal Ministry of Finance reveals that between 2023 and 2025, approximately N47.25 trillion was distributed among the federal, state, and local governments. This represents over 50 percent of the N93.13 trillion shared between 2017 and 2025, a sharp increase following the removal of petrol subsidies and exchange rate reforms.

In Delta State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has specifically challenged Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to account for N214.4 billion in FAAC allocations and at least N65 billion in internally generated revenue from 2019. The opposition party criticized the state's economic policies, alleging a lack of milestone projects and infrastructure development despite the high volume of funds.

Policy analysts and civil society groups have noted that while economic reforms have significantly boosted government revenues, these funds have not yet translated into improved living conditions, better healthcare, or adequate public services for citizens facing rising costs and unemployment.
