Nigeria states generate N114bn in road taxes over three years

Nigeria’s 36 states generated a total of N113.94bn in road taxes between 2023 and 2025, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The revenue fluctuated significantly over the three-year period, starting at N40.14bn in 2023, dropping to N23.92bn in 2024, and rebounding to N49.88bn in 2025.

The NBS defines road taxes as daily levies paid by commercial transporters operating within the states. The sharp decline in 2024 may be attributed to missing data from Lagos State for that year. Lagos remains the dominant collector, contributing N33.61bn across the two years for which its data was available, representing approximately 29.5 per cent of the national total.

Outside of Lagos, Delta State recorded the highest collections with N8.64bn. Other notable contributors included Ondo with N5.99bn, Ogun with N5.49bn, Edo with N5.32bn, and Cross River with N5.28bn.
