Nigeria submits National Adaptation Plan and targets $500m in climate finance
The Nigerian Federal Government has submitted its National Adaptation Plan (NAP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The plan aims to strengthen national resilience to climate change, protect vulnerable communities, and create green economic opportunities by integrating adaptation strategies into government policies and development programs.
To support these efforts, the government is targeting $500 million in climate financing. This funding is intended to strengthen climate-resilient infrastructure, improve adaptation measures, and support policy priorities to mitigate the impacts of flooding and extreme weather events. The government is developing mechanisms to mobilize both domestic and international resources, including the Nigerian Climate Investment Platform.
Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal noted that a Climate Risks and Vulnerability Assessment (CRVA) was used to identify high-risk areas and prioritize strategies. Additionally, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo highlighted the importance of effective weather forecasting and early warning systems, noting the upcoming establishment of the Anticipatory Action Task Force on Floods in 2025.
