Nigeria's Former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele Loses Luxury Properties in Supreme Court Ruling

Nigeria's Supreme Court reinstated the final forfeiture of former Central Bank governor Godwin Emefiele's assets to the Federal Government. A five‑member panel led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa delivered a unanimous judgment that overturned a Court of Appeal decision and restored the Federal High Court's order from November 2024.

The court ordered the permanent forfeiture of seven high‑value properties – two fully detached duplexes in Lekki Phase 1, a bungalow, a four‑bedroom duplex and eight apartment units on Ikoyi, as well as an industrial complex on 22 plots in Agbor, Delta State – together with $2.045 million in cash and share certificates linked to the Queensdorf Global Fund. The assets were deemed proceeds of unlawful activities, and the decision closes a lengthy legal battle involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The ruling transfers full ownership of the properties and cash to the federal government, marking a decisive anti‑corruption victory.
