Nigeria targets $1 trillion economy amid investment and startup growth
Nigeria is facing scrutiny over its ambitious goal to reach a $1 trillion economy by 2030. Industry, Trade, and Investment Minister Jumoke Oduwole noted that much of the reported $50 billion in investment inflows currently consist of announcements rather than deployed cash. To achieve the target, the government must convert these pledges into tangible exports, jobs, and industrial growth.
Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele maintains the target is a concrete objective, though experts suggest the country may require annual growth rates as high as 28% to succeed. The government is working to reduce bureaucratic fragmentation, with a deadline of November 2026 set for the second phase of the National Single Window trade reform.
In the private sector, Nigerian startups raised $364.1 million in August 2026. While Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment John Enoh acknowledged this as a sign of investor confidence, officials emphasized that the long-term challenge lies in ensuring these startups build productive capacity, meet international standards, and contribute to the broader industrialization program through manufacturing and exports.
