Nigeria targets December completion of Kaduna-Kano rail line

The Nigerian Federal Government aims to complete the Kaduna-Zaria-Kano railway route by December. This project is part of a broader initiative to revitalize the nation’s rail transportation system.

During the 19th National Council on Transportation in Abuja, Funsho Adebiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, stated that expanding the railway network is essential to reducing the extreme pressure on Nigeria’s road infrastructure. He noted that approximately 98 per cent of Nigerians currently rely on road transportation, leading to excessive traffic and overloading that exceeds the design capacity of road pavements.

The government intends to shift some of this burden, particularly regarding freight transportation, from roads to the rail network to alleviate stress on the country's road systems.
