Nigeria targets higher meat supply through Kano livestock boost
The Nigerian federal government has launched an initiative in Kano State to boost the productivity of small-ruminant farmers. The program, implemented by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, provides 200 sheep and goat farmers with livestock, feed, and financial support to increase meat supply and household incomes.
In addition to providing assets, the intervention includes a three-day training program focused on improved animal feeding, breeding, healthcare, and general husbandry. Officials stated that the goal is to reduce production losses and equip farmers with the technical capacity to manage stock efficiently, leveraging the low entry barriers of the sheep and goat subsector to support rural economies.
