Nigeria targets rabies elimination and improved livestock traceability

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is launching initiatives to improve animal health and trade capabilities. To combat rabies, the ministry has called for a multi-sectoral collaboration to eliminate the disease by 2030. Plans include mass dog vaccinations across communities and Area Councils, increased public awareness, and the introduction of human pre-exposure prophylaxis for frontline workers such as veterinarians and hunters.

Simultaneously, the Nigerian government is engaging with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) to establish a livestock tracking system. This technical collaboration aims to strengthen animal identification, traceability, and food safety. By implementing systems like microchips or tags, Nigeria intends to meet international trade requirements for exporting meat, honey, and other livestock products while ensuring domestic consumer protection.
