Nigeria targets September 2026 for 2027 budget submission
The Nigerian Federal Government aims to submit its 2027 budget proposal to the National Assembly by September 2026. This initiative seeks to advance the budget cycle and address ongoing implementation challenges and overlapping fiscal years that have affected the country since 2024.
According to a budget call circular signed by Tanimu Yakubu, Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) have been given a deadline of September 18, 2026, to submit their 2027 personnel cost proposals. To facilitate this early submission, the draft 2027-2029 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper was concluded in July 2026.
In an effort to improve accuracy and prevent the inclusion of unestablished agencies, the Budget Office has introduced stricter requirements. MDAs must now submit their respective Establishment Acts alongside budget proposals to avoid rejection. Additionally, the government is working to harmonize macroeconomic assumptions, such as crude oil prices and production, to reduce discrepancies between budget projections and actual economic outcomes.
