Nigeria targets shift from technology consumer to producer

Nigeria is working toward transitioning from a consumer to a producer of technology. Kashifu Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), stated that the nation's digital transformation must focus on creating value and improving productivity through digital self-determination. Key priorities include digital literacy, talent development, and the integration of digital skills into formal education and civil service training.

To unlock this potential, officials emphasized the need for better digital infrastructure, enabling policies, and investment in local research, algorithms, and platforms. While the fintech sector is growing with over 400 startups, industry leaders have called for a more coordinated regulatory environment to reduce operational friction.

In a related development regarding the digital economy, Uber has announced it will wind down its Nigerian operations as of September 2. While the exit has sparked debate regarding the local business environment and regulation, Uber noted the decision is part of a broader review of business priorities and investment focus, similar to its recent exit from Uganda.
