Nigeria threatens to shut Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

The Nigerian Federal Government has issued a two-week ultimatum to motorists and road users regarding the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Olufemi Dare, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, stated that the road may be shut down if there is no significant improvement in safety compliance, vandalism prevention, and the cessation of illegal activities.

The warning follows a directive from the Minister of Works, David Umahi. Officials expressed grave concern over motorists exceeding the prescribed 30km/h speed limit, with some reportedly reaching 120km/h on a route where construction is still active. The Lagos portion of the highway spans approximately 103km across two sections and includes 20 major bridges, many of which remain under construction.

Dare noted that lives are being lost on the highway frequently and emphasized that the government can no longer tolerate the current conditions. He mentioned that the Lekki-Epe Expressway remains available as an alternative route should the shutdown occur.
