Nigeria to accelerate National Food and Nutrition Bill

Vice President Kashim Shettima announced that Nigeria is accelerating work on a National Food and Nutrition Bill. The proposed legislation aims to protect nutrition financing, strengthen accountability, and ensure the sustainability of interventions across different government administrations.

Speaking at the Nigeria-Ethiopia Nutrition Leadership Exchange Forum in Addis Ababa, Shettima noted that the bill would bolster the Federal Government’s Nutrition 774 Initiative. This effort seeks to create a unified response to malnutrition through a compact between federal, state, and local governments, focusing on community-level delivery.

Under the National Policy on Food and Nutrition 2026–2035, Nigeria has established specific targets to reduce the country’s stunting rate to 32 per cent by 2029, 28 per cent by 2032, and 25 per cent by 2035.
