Augustine Eguavoen named interim Super Falcons coach

The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen as the interim manager of the Super Falcons. Eguavoen will lead the team during their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign, specifically for the second-round matches against Comoros scheduled for October 9 and 13 at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.

Eguavoen will be supported by a technical crew including assistant coach Christopher Danjuma, goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa, and assistant coach Ayisat Yusuf. This appointment follows the dismissal of previous coach Justin Madugu after the team failed to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

The team faces significant injury challenges heading into the qualifiers. Midfielder Deborah Abiodun has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season after her NWSL club, the Washington Spirit, confirmed she requires surgery. Additionally, forward Esther Okoronkwo is expected to miss the upcoming fixtures due to an ongoing injury that has yet to receive a definitive diagnosis.
