Nigeria to deploy biogas technology in abattoirs

The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NBRDA) and the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) have entered into a partnership to convert abattoir waste into renewable energy. Through a Memorandum of Understanding and a Memorandum of Agreement signed in Abuja, the agencies aim to utilize anaerobic digestion to process organic materials such as animal blood, manure, rumen contents, and wastewater.

This initiative seeks to address environmental sanitation challenges and protect water resources by reducing the accumulation of untreated organic waste around slaughter facilities. Beyond waste management, the project is intended to promote sustainable energy production, create economic opportunities, and support wealth creation through waste-to-wealth technologies.
