Nigeria to deploy two new NigComSat satellites for broadband expansion

Nigeria's Federal Executive Council has approved the acquisition and deployment of two next-generation high-throughput communication satellites, NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B. The project is being led by Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

To manufacture the satellites, NIGCOMSAT is working with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and France’s Thales Alenia Space. The deployment is intended to expand broadband coverage and strengthen critical communications, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach areas where terrestrial infrastructure is difficult or costly to install.

The satellites are expected to support various sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and government services. The launch process is planned to occur in two phases, with the first potentially at the end of 2028 and the second scheduled for 2029 or 2030.
