Nigeria to Host 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos

Nigeria will host the senior 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Federation Championships in Lagos from August 9‑14, becoming the first African nation to stage the event. President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, said the tournament, expected to draw about 30 Commonwealth countries, will boost participation, expand fencing in schools and clubs, and generate economic benefits for hospitality, tourism and entertainment.

The championship will introduce an Under‑23 category and, for the first time, include wheelchair fencing with medals. Nigeria will host wheelchair fencers from eight nations and launch a wheelchair fencing academy in partnership with World Ability Sports to train athletes, coaches and referees, positioning the country as a hub for adaptive sport in Africa.
