Nigeria to host World Polo Championship qualifiers in Abuja

Nigeria is set to host the Federation of International Polo (FIP) Zone E World Cup Play-Offs in Abuja from November 9 to 16, 2026. The tournament, held at the Guards Polo Club, will feature teams from Nigeria, India, Iran, and Pakistan competing for a spot in the 2027 FIP World Cup finals in Uruguay.

In preparation for such international events, the National Sports Commission (NSC) is planning a major upgrade of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko stated that the commission intends to improve the grass playing surface, lighting, and essential infrastructure. The goal is to transform the stadium into a multipurpose sports and entertainment complex capable of generating revenue through hospitality, commercial, and conference services.

The hosting of the polo qualifiers is viewed as a significant opportunity to boost sports tourism and demonstrate Nigeria’s capacity to organize international competitions, potentially creating economic benefits in the hospitality and transportation sectors.
