Nigeria to introduce electricity tariffs for 25 universities and hospitals

The Nigerian Federal Government has announced plans to introduce electricity tariffs for 25 federal universities and teaching hospitals that benefit from government-funded renewable energy projects. The announcement was made by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, during the unveiling of the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) in Abuja.

Tegbe stated that while some institutions have received free electricity for approximately two years, the pro bono period is ending. The new tariff regime is intended to ensure the long-term maintenance and sustainability of the renewable energy infrastructure, addressing historical challenges in sustaining public assets after construction.

Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), noted that since 2017, the REA has deployed 82 megawatts of solar hybrid power across 22 federal universities and three teaching hospitals under the Energising Education Programme. Aliyu emphasized that beneficiary institutions must contribute financially to the continued operation and maintenance of these facilities.
