Nigeria to establish national electricity complaints call centre

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has announced plans to establish a national electricity complaints call centre. The initiative aims to provide consumers with a direct channel to report service challenges, seek redress, and track complaints to resolution, while also creating job opportunities for young Nigerians.

During the commissioning of a 3-megawatt hybrid solar power project at Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja, Tegbe also unveiled plans for a dedicated reporting channel to combat the vandalism of critical electricity infrastructure. The government intends to collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to protect assets such as transformers and transmission towers.

While the government presents these measures as tools for accountability and consumer confidence, some commentary suggests the move may overlap with existing regulatory frameworks managed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
